Parsek or Google? When each one wins.
Parsek is an independent search engine: it has its own crawler and its own index, and it is built by one developer in Buenos Aires. It is not a layer on top of Google or Bing. That makes it far smaller than Google, and different in ways worth knowing before you switch.
The numbers
| Pages in the index | 1,126,284 in Parsek, from more than 140,000 sites. Google says its own “covers hundreds of billions of webpages”. |
| Whose index | Parsek's own. ParsekBot reads 40 pages a minute and obeys every site's robots.txt. |
| Who builds it | One person. Google is built by Google. |
| Languages | Spanish and English. Google, nearly all of them. |
| Images, maps, video | Parsek has none. Google has all three. |
Where Parsek wins
- Comparing prices in Argentina. Search for a product and Parsek asks 16 Argentine shops at that moment, and puts the lowest price for the same item first. Nobody pays to appear in the comparison.
- Your payments and your banks. Tick the cards and banks you have, and every price shows the interest-free payments you get and what your banks give at that shop.
- What it cost before. Parsek writes down every day what the products it compares cost, so a "40% off" can be held up against last week's price.
- Good news first. Search for the news and the first tab is what went right: science, discoveries, progress. The rest is one click away.
- What is local. The weather in every town, Argentine football fixtures and tables, the time anywhere, and the official sites people in Argentina search for most.
Where Google is better
- Size. For something very specific, very old or an hour old, Google most likely has it and Parsek may not.
- Freshness. Google rereads big sites constantly. Parsek reads 40 pages a minute.
- Images, maps, video and businesses near you. Parsek has none of them.
- Speed. Parsek answers in about half a second. Google is faster.
Use both. Search Parsek first for what you are about to buy and for what is happening here. For what Parsek has not read yet, there is Google.
Parsek's numbers come from its own index and update themselves. Google's is the one Google publishes.
